N50 — Noida 50 Years Metal Installation
A commemorative civic landmark fabricated for the Noida 50 Years celebration. The numerals read as a monumental marker from across the plaza, while a cut-metal cityscape worked into their faces resolves only at close range — and internal lighting turns the piece into a different object after dark.
The brief
A fiftieth anniversary marker for a city has an awkward double job. It has to function as a landmark — legible at distance, photographable, unmistakable — and it has to actually mean something about the place it commemorates, rather than being a generic number on a plinth.
The idea
The numerals are built as containers rather than as solid forms. Cut into their faces is a dense skyline of towers, buildings and rising arrows — Noida’s own growth over five decades, rendered as the substance the numerals are made from.
From across a plaza the piece reads simply as N50. Walk toward it and the surface breaks down into a city. That change on approach is the whole design.
Fabrication
The work is cut and welded metal, assembled as sections and finished in an antique bronze patina that lets the cut edges catch light and separates the skyline from the openings behind it.
Lighting was designed in from the start rather than added afterwards. The numerals are internally lit, so at night the cut cityscape becomes the light source itself and the piece inverts — dark forms on a bright ground rather than the reverse.
Why it matters for public commissions
A permanently installed, unsupervised, publicly accessible piece has to be detailed for its site: anchored against wind loading, free of sharp edges at hand height, and with the electrical work sealed and separately accessible for maintenance. N50 is the clearest demonstration we have of that whole chain — concept, fabrication, lighting, siting and installation delivered by one studio.
