A Varanasi studio, 27 years in
Graphic Arts opened on 1 January 1999 in Lanka, Varanasi, and has operated continuously from Sankat Mochan Road ever since. It began as a design and print shop; over 27 years it grew into a studio that makes public sculpture, relief murals, wall paintings and civic landmarks — while the press in the front room kept running.
Two halves of one business
The signboard still reads Designing · Printing · Photography, and all three still happen here every day. But the work that takes us out of Varanasi is the other half — sculpture and beautification for municipal bodies, temples, hotels and institutions.
The two are less separate than they look. A studio that designs, prints, photographs and fabricates under one roof does not have to hand a project between suppliers, and the seams where projects usually go wrong are the handovers.
Working in every medium
Most sculpture fabricators specialise in one material. We work in FRP, GRC, carved cement, fabricated and cast metal, reclaimed scrap, wire, and paint at building scale.
That is a deliberate choice, and it changes the conversation with a client. When a workshop only casts fiber, every project turns out to need fiber. Working across all of them means we can say that a piece should be GRC because it will sit in the sun for thirty years, or carved cement because it should become part of the wall — and have no commercial reason to say otherwise.
Why Varanasi matters to the work
A great deal of what we are asked to make is devotional. In Kashi that iconography is not researched, it is the tradition the city uses daily — which matters when a trust commissions a figure and correct mudra, attribute and proportion are the brief rather than a detail.
Being in Uttar Pradesh matters commercially too. Almost all our competition sits in Delhi NCR, Jaipur or Gujarat, and for a public body in this state that distance decides whether anyone visits during fabrication, how a damaged piece gets repaired, and whether the supplier returns to re-coat it in year six.
The studio
The Lanka shop houses a production-class digital colour press, a wide-format roll-to-roll printer, and the design and finishing benches. Sculpture and fabrication work is built out from here, and monumental pieces are made in sections for assembly on site.
